Studying: Marketing, Advertising and PR
Chosen career: Marketing Consultant
What would you consider to be your ideal job?
I would like to be a marketing consultant, I can't think of anything better than working with new businesses. I really enjoy creating brands and coming up with original promotional ideas. I am also attracted to this career because it allows me to be versatile and no two days will be the same.
How did you come about considering this career?
Growing up I always wanted to be an artist and repertoire (A&R) but I realised that my interested in this career was based on my desire to create brands and market them. As I got older I thought I should take the best part of that career and focus on something I could realistically make good money from. I dream of opening my own creative agency and employing other consultants to create a team of smart, dynamic and daring individuals that share my passion for business.
Are you confident that you studied the right subject at University?
Originally I chose marketing as my major and after two years of studying I changed it to marketing, advertising and PR. I wanted to get a better idea of those three principles and not just marketing theory. I've been thinking about postgraduate study and I'm considering to take up business management.
What do you think constituted to you being confident about your chosen career?
I think having a lot of experience in the field has given me confidence. Even when working in retail as a teenager I was giving my employer advice on how to promote the store and get more customers in. I have a genuine interest in marketing, I can't see myself doing anything else.
Have you got experience in the field already?
I have experience in PR, branding, digital marketing and retail and I'm always on the look out to try new things and learn new skills. The route to becoming a successful consultant means not only experiencing these principles - but mastering them, which is exactly what I aim to do.
What’s the best piece of career advice you’d give to someone who wants the same career?
Never stop learning new skills, as a consultant in business you have to believe in what you're doing and be skilled enough to know that you're doing it right.
